Restoring the Past: The Value of Tradition Today

The start of a new year is the hallmark opportunity to look back at the accomplishments and missteps of the past and plan ahead for new successes in the future. For me, this practice used to be a thoughtful, reflective process of contemplating what had happened over the preceding year. Now, Facebook will compile a snapshot of my 2013 with the click of my mouse.

Technology. For all its innovation and progress, some would argue technology is robbing current & future generations of certain human and emotional aspects of life. There’s a great Apple advertisement out now that shows an extended family getting together for Christmas and centers on a teenage boy who appears too occupied with his iPhone to experience the family memory making going on around him. We discover on Christmas morning that he has actually used his iPhone to make a video montage of said memory making. Everyone’s impressed, grandma cries, teen is vindicated and wins the freedom to stick his nose in his phone for the rest of 2014.

It made me think, while technology is increasing the pace of life and business it is still a medium that is of – and for – humans. And that while the science of technology is fact, finite and straightforward, the art of how you apply it is wide open for the human touch.

A recent article in Signs of the Times magazine (“Everything Old is New Again,” November 2013) looked at the enduring appeal of tradition set against the momentum of today’s fast paced technology-driven sign businesses. In their humble opinion, the past – and all of the warm and fuzzy nostalgia that goes along with it – still plays an important and coveted role in many manufacturing businesses.

When evaluating the bygone year, you may feel it’s time to put a software solution designed for the sign industry to work for your business to help cut costs and better manage your operations. And, yet that doesn’t mean you need to abandon the values and traditions that your business was founded upon. Software doesn’t need to overtake your business – it’s a tool. It should be seen as a key asset, just like the front desk receptionist who makes your visitors and callers feel welcome.

KeyedIn Solutions has focused its business on helping job shops, sign businesses and other manufacturers take charge of the business – from estimating and production to scheduling and shop floor data collection.

One of the reasons our customers have been successful with bringing KeyedIn enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions on board is because the Software-as-a-Service delivery format is noninvasive compared to on-premise solutions, which means it is typically not a radical culture shock or learning curve. Your company can still be your company – only better, faster, more strategic, and a better competitor.
